Exercise In Perspective Series

The idea began simply with extending the perspective lines from my drawing into and throughout the gallery space. Perspective drawing is a basic concept for any art student, but the conceit of the project is using subjective perspective rather than two point. On top of this the perspective choices are not mine. The choices and views selected are not my own. The perspective is not just the vanishing point perspective but also personal perspectives. For the Crossroads School installation students in 2nd - 12 grades choose which points to pull the perspective lines, they choose the trajectory and then they pulled the lines. In a way it was about accepting others perspectives. I could not argue that a 2nd graders choice of perspective was incorrect because that was just how that 2nd grader saw it and decided. That child’s physical view is different, their life experiences informed them differently, etc.

For the Volta NY Chimento Contemporary booth and Chimento Gallery installations I set out simple rules- one could add, lift up, push down but not remove another perspective line. The work in these settings became a study in empathy and how personal perspectives become a visual community of lines. It was interesting for me to see the web of perspectives one work can inspire.

The Private commission reflected the collectors architectural selections and the family and friends perspective lines. This work can grow over time as the family invites special guests to add their perspectives to the work.
