Nassau Contour Installation at SLS Bahamar, The Bahamas

In 2018 I received the Bahamar Art Prize and with it a commission for a wall drawing for the SLS Baha Mar Hotel. The piece was created after a community gathering where local scholars, historians, artists and government workers meet with me and suggested buildings and places to visit. The work weaves together historic structures as well as local favorites with the archipelago of the islands weaving throughout the work. It includes histories like a segregation wall, Blackbeard’s tower, slave quarters, the local library which used to be a jail, and a beloved aquarium which is now unused because of hurricane damage. Placing these histories in the work in the lobby of a hotel creates a conversation starter, a moment when the workers of the hotel can share their islands story.
